THE STORY
Founded in 1927, Mascarello Michele & Figli is a historic family winery based in La Morra, in the heart of the Langhe. Today the estate is led by Fabio Mascarello and continues its traditional approach of careful grape selection and classic Piedmontese winemaking. In 2022, the winery was officially entered into Italy's Register of Historic Trademarks of National Interest, recognizing its long connection to the territory.
THE VINEYARD
Produced entirely from Nebbiolo grown in the Barolo territory, the Riserva Umberto represents the pinnacle of the Mascarello family's production. The estate encompasses approximately 18 hectares of vineyards, with its historic eighteenth-century cellar located in La Morra. Only around 2,000 bottles of the 2019 Riserva were produced, making it a particularly limited release.
WINEMAKING
Mascarello follows a distinctly traditional philosophy, emphasizing careful fruit selection and long maturation rather than an overtly modern style. The 2019 Barolo Riserva Umberto was matured for five years in large oak casks, allowing Nebbiolo's powerful tannins and complex aromatics to develop slowly while maintaining the character of the variety and terroir.
The five years in large oak, 2,000-bottle production and tasting profile are specifically documented for the 2019 Barolo Umberto Riserva. The winery itself confirms its traditional approach and its status as an Italian Historic Trademark of National Interest.
TASTING NOTES
Complex and beautifully evolved, with aromas of ripe red fruit, liquorice, vanilla and chocolate. The palate is warm, enveloping and structured, displaying the firm yet increasingly integrated tannins characteristic of mature Nebbiolo. Layers of red fruit, spice and savoury complexity lead into a persistent finish accented by elegant balsamic notes.
FOOD PAIRING
An exceptional partner for braised beef, roasted or grilled red meats, lamb, game, truffle dishes, porcini mushrooms and aged cheeses. Its structure and complexity also make it an excellent wine for extended cellaring.
