The Story
The term Scalunera, Sicilian for staircase, refers to the terraced vineyards found on the steep slopes of the Etna volcano. This wonderful scenario is characterized by the typical lava stone walls, declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Their ancient shapes embellish the flanks of the volcano, recalling the steps of an old amphitheater.
Winemaking
The Carricante is bush vined and cordon spurred at an elevation of 700 meters above sea level. Grapes are hand harvested in late September at a yield of 7 tons per hectare. The grapes are cooled with carbonic ice to avoid oxidation. Soft pressing ensues and controlled temperature fermentation for 15 days before 3 months of batonnage to add texture and complexity.
Tasting Notes
Appealing nose with real character, aroma reminiscent of ripe fruit, ripe pear and hints of pear peel, juicy apple and hints of apricots. In the background discreet earthy notes, hints of smoky character. With some time in the glass, a subtle aroma reminiscent of white blossoms and aromatic herbs is showing up. On the palate well-structured and balanced with ripe and juicy fruit, ripe pear, apple and apricots, distinct minerality and an elegant phenolic touch. Good body and length. Shows layers of fruit, with discreet hints of mild spices in the convincing finish.
